Time to talk about organ donation
After passing a resolution at the NFWI Annual Meeting in 2014, we have been encouraging members to share their wishes about organ donation with their loved ones.
What is the law on organ donation in Wales?
In 2015 a new ‘opt-out’ system was introduced in Wales. This means that adults are now assumed to have consented to organ donation unless they register to opt-out.
Despite this, families of those ‘deemed’ to have consented can still prevent them from donating their organs. Families also have to be consulted when someone has opted into donating their organs.
These allowances have been made to ensure families are not distressed and to help doctors know more about the life of the person donating.
Some of the ways members have been raising awareness of the campaign include:
- joining the NHS Organ Donation Register
- promoting the campaign in their WIs and communities
- talking about the campaign on social media using the hashtag #WITimetoTalk
- sharing their stories about organ donation with us
