Grow your own Microgreens

Microgreens are tiny seedlings of plants, usually harvested when fully grown, between 7 and 14 days after germination. They provide a concentrated flavour of the fully grown plants and are quick and easy to grow. Microgreens contain vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. They are also a source of Iron, Folic acid and Potassium.

You can use dried seeds and pulses that are sold for cooking such as fava beans, dill, and fennel. Mustard seeds, Greek cress, rocket, spinach and cabbage also make good microgreens. Why not try pea shoots, sunflower shoots and coriander, which can be used on a salad?

You will need

  • Seeds
  • Egg box
  • Compost

To Make

Grow microgreens from seed in an egg box, yoghurt pots, an old piece of guttering, an old vegetable box or how about a seed tray?

Fill your container of choice with compost. With your finger, the handle of a wooden spoon or trowel, create a trough and sprinkle the seeds in.

Ensure the seeds are evenly spread. Cover with the compost and lightly water. Place on a windowsill and allow to grow.
