Celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee
This year, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. On behalf of the WI, members, trustees and staff, I would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations.
We are exceptionally proud that The Queen has been a member of the WI for almost 80 years, having joined when she was still Princess Elizabeth in 1943. The Queen followed in her mother’s and grandmother’s footsteps, who were both members of Sandringham WI from its earliest days; today she is President of Sandringham WI and attends their January meeting each year.
To celebrate The Queen’s momentous anniversary of 70 years on the throne, we wanted to launch a fun and engaging community project that would extend the WI hand of friendship, and love of knitting and craft. Where’s WInnie? has brought together members of all skills levels and interests to create and hide their own corgi. For those who find the corgis, they can visit the WI website to map where they have found her and post on social media using hashtag #WheresWInnie. We hope that WInnie the corgi will brighten the day of anyone who finds her.
It was a joy to hear Her Majesty speak of her admiration and pride at the achievements of the WI at the Centenary Annual Meeting in 2015. We wish her good health to continue her reign with the dignity and dedication that she has shown throughout.
