1964: Smoking in public places

Just ten years after researchers in the UK had established a link between smoking and lung cancer, the WI passed a resolution which called for measures ‘to restrict the amount of smoking in public places,’ including the amount of smoking broadcast on television.

One year later in 1965, smoking was banned in television adverts. Eventually in 1984 there was a ban on smoking on the London underground and finally in public buildings in 2007.
