1994: Legal Aid

The WI has a history of supporting victims of domestic violence. In 1994 Kington with Dormston WI proposed a resolution urging the government to reverse its decision to restrict access to the legal aid system, which members believed resulted in survivors of domestic abuse not being able to access justice.

The WI revisited its work on legal aid in 2011 in response to new concerns that reforms laid out in a Government bill would make it harder for survivors of domestic violence and other vulnerable people to access legal aid.

This second leg of the campaign was successful when the government backtracked on plans to cut access to legal aid for survivors of domestic violence and delivered concessions on the WI’s major areas of concern.
