Annual council meeting
The GWFI Annual Council Meeting 2016 was held on Tuesday 10th May at the Princess Royal Theatre, Port Talbot. 500 members attended and after the singing of Jerusalem, chairman Carolyn Davies welcomed everyone. Following the roll call, Clare Atherton county treasurer, gave a detailed financial report, followed by our very own Daphne Furneaux , a Glamorgan member, NFWI floral judge and Chelsea Gold Medalist who treated us to a fabulous flower demonstration. Carolyn, retiring county Chair thanked Daphne and presented her with the Chairman`s Plate for her long service and dedication.
Emma Leeke, the second guest speaker of the morning session, spoke about her family history, the development of the family business and her role in the family`s retail business. The recently formed Margam WI Ukulele band sent everyone to lunch with a smile and and a song.
The afternoon session commenced with the introduction of the new Board members and the presentation of awards, certificates and cups. Our afternoon guest speaker was Mr John Benjamin, a gemologist, an expert on antique jewelry and presenter on the BBC`s Antique Roadshow. He enthralled the members with an account of his early career and experiences and his explanation of the history of gems and some of the more unusual "finds" on the Roadshow.
A very successful meeting closed with the singing of the anthems.
