Who We Are
DFWI is managed by an elected Board of Trustees of up to 12 members. Elections are held biannually and any member may stand for election. The Board of Trustees elect their own officers.
In Devon there are 7,000 members in 218 WIs.
DFWI holds two council meetings a year. This is the time when members meet the Board of Trustees and hear about federation business. Each WI is entitled to send a delegate to vote on their behalf. These are day-long occasions that include awards for members’ achievements and entertainment. Presentations are given by local worthwhile causes and the day always culminates with a well-known speaker. The Spring Council Meeting is held in Torbay and the Autumn Council Meeting moves around the county.
DFWI owns its own property at The Firs in Clyst Honiton, Exeter where members are always sure of a warm welcome by our three part-time office staff. There is a comfortable members’ room for refreshments, and WI stationery is available. All subcommittees meet in the federation office at The Firs.
Devon Federation Subcommittees
WI Advisers are trained and appointed jointly by DFWI and the NFWI to work under the direction of the DFWI Board of Trustees. They form DFWI’s Membership Support subcommittee. Their role is to support, inform and encourage WIs, to research areas for new WIs and to form new WIs. They attend and help at all kinds of WI meetings, plan and run training sessions, and keep DFWI informed of WI activities and opinions. A WI Adviser usually looks after three or four WI Groups (see page 9) and therefore each WI has its own assigned WI Adviser.
