Speak Up Week of Action 1st to 9th July 2017

Why a week of action?

The effect of climate change has major implications for the people and places we love both here in the UK and overseas. We know that most of the UK public want to see progress on tackling climate change. And we know that many politicians are unlikely to take action unless they realise how much we care, and how many of us care. By talking about the things we love that could be affected by climate change, we can show politicians that this is an issue that affects us all, and that this is a movement they need to be a part of.

Why the WI?

We are a member of the Climate Coalition, an organisation with a combined supporter base of more than 15 million people across the UK. The network brings together over 100 organisations, from environment and development charities to unions, faith and belief, community and women’s groups.

How can your WI help?

The single aim of the Week of Action is to demonstrate to our leaders in both politics and industry that people DO care, that we LOVE our planet and want them to take action to tackle climate change. If people are talking about climate change, they are going to believe we care. So organise something to get people talking to each other about climate change. And most important of all – invite your local MPs.

Tell People

The most important thing about your event is that it needs to be communicated to as many people as possible. Invite your local MPs to any events you might be holding. Invite local business leaders, the Mayor, your local councillors, leaders of education or government. Invite the press as well, make sure you tell them before the event and send them a report and photos after the event.
