Although at this stage we are not aware of the resolution/s that will be taken to our 2019 National AGM.

But have no fear we will have an expert on the subject/s with added information for you to be able to come to an opinion and enlighten your own WI members.

Information about the speaker/s will be sent as soon as we know (late February) to your Secretary so do make a point of looking out for it.

This course is suitable for beginners and improvers.  Julie Walsby has been a Denman Tutor for many years and is renowned for her crewel and long and short stitch work.

“Mysteries of Fenland Churches”

Day out in North Norfolk with Denman Tutor

On Wednesday, 8th May, 2019

Visit four Fenland Churches, Wiggenhall St Germans, Tilney All Saints, Wiggenhall St Mary the Virgin and Wiggenhall St Mary Magdalene, to learn of the mysteries within!

We will explore these churches with John, who has a great passion for the unusual history of some of our English churches – they are not as ordinary as we sometimes think!

After meeting John to have refreshing coffee we will set off for the first two churches, and then, after lunch at the Wildfowler, we will visit the last two churches, before having a cup of tea prior to our homeward journey!

The price is £48.00 Members and £51.00 Non-members for visits, coach travel, tea/coffee and lunch, all-inclusive!

Get Creative

Get Creative Festival shines a light on all the great cultural activity that takes place right across the UK on a regular basis and encourages people to try their hand at something new and creative. This huge national celebration of creativity aims to give everyone the chance to get actively involved in a creative event in their local area.

From Saturday 11th – Sunday 19th May 2019 hundreds of organisations and community groups will be putting on events to help you get creative – and they’re free or have just a small fee to cover costs. Last year there were over 1,400 events across the UK during the 2018 festival and numbers will be growing in 2019 to celebrate and showcase creativity in every community.

CFWI are taking part and are holding their own Get Creative event "Try it Morning" on Thursday 16 May 2019 10.00 am to 1.00 pm in the CFWI Office when you will be able to make a pressed flower bookmark, a button card, a prick an stitch card or learn to crochet.  Tea, coffee and cake will be available to purchase.

Jigsaw Challenge 2019

At Landbeach Village Hall

Monday 20 May 2019, 10am for 10.30am start

Gather a team of 4 friends from your WI and come along to take part in our annual Jigsaw Challenge to see who can complete the picture first.

(If you can’t find 4 members to make a team then we will try to match

you with ladies from other WI’s)

You will be welcomed with tea, coffee and biscuits from 10am.

A light lunch of soup and crispy bread followed by a sweet surprise will be served at about 12.30pm when all puzzles are completed.

A small prize will be awarded to the members of the winning team.

Why not bring along your old tried and tested puzzles to swap with other members on the day.

If you are interested in craft or food this is a three in one trip for you, including retail therapy!

Our first stop is the ‘Cheap Shop’ where they aim to stock all materials and tools needed for any task – fabrics, yarns, arts and crafts, haberdashery, cake decorating and even a dolls house department.

Our second stop is Perrygood Garden Centre which is number four in the Garden Centre Association league table.  Here is our lunch stop too.  Our final destination is Tiptree Fruit Farms where we have a guided tractor tour through the strawberry fields followed by a cream tea.

Victoria and Albert Museum, London

Exhibition Christian Dior – Designer of Dreams

This year we will be running a coach trip to the very popular Victoria & Albert Museum in Kensington, London with a chance to see the latest exhibition which will be entitled “Christian Dior – Designer of Dreams”. The exhibition spans from 1947 to the present day and will range from the classic looks to the out of the ordinary range when John Galliano worked for Dior. This exhibition will trace the history and impact of one of the 20th century’s most influential couturiers. It will explore the enduring influence of the fashion house and Dior’s relationship with Britain.  We will get a chance to see not only the couture clothing but also limited edition perfume bottles.

On arrival, there will be a chance to have a coffee or a spot of lunch and a gentle wander around the many galleries available before our tour of the exhibition begins.  For those of you not familiar with the V & A, there is a café and coffee spots available on site.  The galleries available will include the newly revamped jewellery gallery.  This will include a spectacular coronet worn by Queen Victoria.

We will aim to leave for home at 4.00 pm.

Have you ever waited for a bus that takes ages to arrive and found yourself listening in and enjoying the gossip and lifestyle stories of those who join you at the bus stop?  Well, come along to Curtain Up and listen in with us as a group of women from a variety of life experiences wait for the long overdue bus.  Enjoy their gossip, appreciate their frustrations and hopes.  This amusing play about an everyday situation will entertain you and also give you a twist in the tail.

Menu: Country chicken casserole and vegetables, Cheesecake coffee or tea.

A vegetarian option will be available.

Please bring your own drink, plate, cutlery and a bag to take them home in, water available on the night

Burwell Museum and Windmill

Set among beautifully preserved historic farming buildings, Burwell Museum tells the story of a bustling fen-edge village. Alongside the 19th-century mill, displays from the everyday to the amazing vividly recreate Burwell life over the ages.   The visit will include a tour of the museum, an (optional!) opportunity to go all the way to the top of the windmill and tea and biscuits.

Visit to Denby Pottery

Due to a popular visit three years ago, we are returning to Denby Pottery!   Coffee will be available on arrival at 10.15am, followed by a 90 minute walking factory tour when you will discover different technologies and processes used to create your favourite Denby pieces. Then why not have a go yourself by making the historic Denby frog and paint a pot.  Lunch will be available at Bourne’s restaurant and then you have the opportunity for some retail therapy in units around a cobbled courtyard – Denby Store and Cookshop, Factory Outlet Shop, Dartington Crystal Factory Shop, Gift Emporium and a Farm Shop.

Due to health and safety, no children under 6, prams, buggies or wheelchairs are allowed on the factory tour.

Watercolour Day School

Friday 5 July 2019

We are pleased to offer this exciting Day School with local Artist, Jennifer Copley-May. Watercolour is a wonderful versatile medium and techniques and colour mixing will form part of the day. The subject will be a still life arrangement and students will be able to paint all or part of the arrangement as they wish. It will be an enjoyable and creative day with the emphasis on developing your own style, with professional teaching and guidance.This one day workshop will be suitable for both beginners and those with more experience of the medium. Some materials will be available for students to use but you are encouraged to bring any watercolour paints, brushes, and papers you may have and a board to work on if possible. A jar for water would also be helpful.

Coffee and tea will be provided but please bring a packed lunch. Numbers for this course are strictly limited, to enable students to have as much personal attention as they need, therefore it is open to WI members only.

Let’s Celebrate

CFWI Centenary Dinner

We are pleased to announce that enough applications have been received for the dinner at Girton to go ahead and we have confirmed the booking with the College; further information about choosing dishes from the menu will follow soon.  However, despite the closing date having passed, if there is anyone else that would like to attend the dinner there are some places left.  The details are as follows:

The dinner is being held at Girton College, Cambridge on 20 July with a 6.30 for 7.30pm start.  We are having a three-course dinner with musical entertainment to finish off the evening.  There will be a drinks reception from 6.30pm, when pre-dinner drinks and wine/soft drinks for the table may be purchased.  All dietary requirements will be catered for.

The cost is £53.00 per person and the event is open to ALL so you can bring along husbands, partners, friends or relations to celebrate 100 years of CFWI.

If you are interested in having a place at our table please complete and return the form with your secretary as soon as possible. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

“Kinky Boots”

A Musical inspired by a true story

Kinky Boots is a Broadway and London musical which has been showing in the West End for a few years.  It is now touring the country and coming to Milton Keynes in November 2019.

Based on the 2005 British film Kinky Boots, written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth and inspired by true events, the musical tells the story of Charlie Price. Having inherited a shoe factory in Northampton from his father, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots and save the business. In the process, Charlie and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.  The Times says “an absolute hoot of a show” while the Evening Standard says “a glorious high kicking romp”.

TUTANKHAMUN + LONDON'S CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Celebrating CFWI 100th Centenary this year we have found an exceptional event for you all to enjoy.

150 artefacts from King Tutankhamun's treasures are coming to London – this is the last time they will ever leave Egypt, and we would like to offer you the opportunity of obtained tickets for this exciting exhibition.

The venue is in the Saatchi Gallery, King's Road, Chelsea, the tickets will be booked for 1.30pm with the chance to look around the exhibition until 3.45pm.

When back on the coach we will be accompanied by a Blue Badge Guide for a delightful trip around to enjoy the Christmas lights in London. Leaving for home at 6.30.

As we are not due to the gallery until 1.30 there will be plenty of time beforehand to purchase your lunch.

As this will be a very popular event we have to obtain the tickets early, so do get your name on the booking form.

Please note: Transport for London are introducing an 'Ultra Low Emission Zone' for coaches which covers Central London from 9th April. This will affect us travelling into London and the extra cost will have to be added to the trip.
