Women's Fight for the Vote

A day school with Dr Claire Nicholson on Wednesday 23 October 2019

We are thrilled to welcome back Dr Claire Nicholson, who will share with us the incredible lengths to which women went to get the right to vote!  This will take place on Wednesday 23 October 2019, 10.00am – 4.00pm at the WI Office in Girton, to celebrate the centenary of this event in 1918.

Claire, who has taught us so much already about the Bloomsbury Group and their associates in such an informative and entertaining way, has agreed to come and tell us about the background of the campaign (which stretches right back to the 1860’s!) and will then concentrate upon the period from 1903-1918, focusing on the difference between Suffragists and Suffragettes, and the actresses, writers and journalists of the time who helped promote this important cause.

This promises to be a fantastic day and we hope that you will come and be part of this adventure back in time for such a well fought cause, especially as some of our founding members played a significant role in this momentous era!

Please bring a packed lunch and we will provide coffee and tea during the day.

Cost per member - £35.00

Closing Date: Tuesday 1 October 2019.

9 to 5

Theatre Trip to the Savoy Theatre London

Matinee Performance 2.30pm

Wednesday 22 January 2020

How about treating yourself to a nice day out in London to cheer you up after the post Christmas and New Year lull?

We are running a coach outing to the Savoy Theatre in London to see 9 to 5 the musical.  The female-led, hugely fun musical follows workmates Doralee, Violet and Judy as they prepare to take revenge on their incredibly sexist Supervisor. But as they tie him up and begin reforming the office, their CEO pays a surprise visit that none of them bargained for. Starring Louise Redknapp (Cabaret/Strictly Come Dancing), Amber Davies (Love Island) and Natalie McQueen (Kinky Boots), alongside the all round entertainer Brian Conley and Bonnie Langford, (Eastenders and various musicals) this stellar cast is guaranteed to provide a lot of laughter.

It features original music and lyrics by Country legend Dolly Parton.  The score was nominated for an Oscar, Grammy and Tony Awards.  A hilarious musical comedy based on the acclaimed film of the same name.

We will be leaving Trumpington Park & Ride at 10.00 am.  The coach will be provided by Richmonds.  We are aiming to arrive in London at around 12 noon so you will have time for a spot of lunch/shopping before the performance starts at 2.30 pm.  We will be leaving London straight after the show.

Cost:  WI Members £64.00          Non-Members £67.00

Closing date: Friday 15 November 2019
