Marcham Park, an attractive Georgian house near Abingdon, was bought for the sum of £16,000 including a walled garden, around 100 acres of land, cottages and a lake. The Carnegie United Kingdom trust gave £20,000 on condition that the Institutes raised the rest themselves. Every WI was invited to raise £10 over three years to donate to the project.
WI members were generous with gifts, and at this time of rationing curtains were made by working parties from bleached black-out curtains. Federations offered to equip the bedrooms. The opening ceremony was performed by Sir Richard Livingstone, and the college was named Denman College to honour Lady Denman who had now retired after 30 years as National Chairman.
