Welcome to the Cambridge Federation

As life becomes ever more hectic the WI, with its traditional values but modern outlook is appealing to more and more ‘Inspiring Women’.  Whatever your interests… I believe we can offer you something in the Cambridge Federation.Heather Wilkin - Federation Chairman
Firstly, a bit of the history… the Cambridge Federation of Women’s Institutes (CFWI) was created in 1919 and we now have about 70 individual WIs in the area around Cambridge, several of which have been in existence a little longer than the Federation.  Total membership is just over 2000.

Secondly, what we are …with state-of-the-art eco-friendly offices situated in the village of Girton (home also to the famous College for women), we provide excellent facilities for administration and for many of the events held by the Federation.  The Executive Committee of 12 oversees the activities of various sub-committees covering public affairs, leisure, combined arts, as well as home economics and specialised crafts (fondly known as HEC and SPEC!), membership & marketing and finance.

Thirdly, what we do… Federation events range from rifle shooting and archery to beading and patchwork, science and health evenings to issues concerning drugs, waste recycling and many more, and there is ample opportunity for all members to become involved in the various campaigns being spearheaded by our national organisation, as well as to attend activities such as lunches, dinners and evenings with our own drama group (The Federation Players) or one of the many outings organised throughout the year.  Two weekend breaks per year are also very popular.  Most individual WIs organise events for their own members so there is plenty of choice.

Each WI in our Federation has a ‘flavour’ of its own but whichever one you choose to visit will give you a warm welcome and offer an opportunity to meet new friends and learn more about your area.  For more information on venues and meeting dates please get in touch.
