Step into a Healthier Lifestyle

Food Standards Agency Logo
In conjunction with the Food Standards Agency, (FSA) the NFWI invited federations and WI members to help cascade knowledge and raise awareness of the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle
Federations and WI members were set two separate challenges:

WI Challenge: To produce 10 tops tips for a healthy lifestyle, supported by a menu for a healthy picnic which should be themed and could include special homemade recipes.

Federation Challenge: To organise an event/project to raise awareness of the challenge and spread the word to fellow WI members, friends, family and the general community.  Federations who took part would receive a £250 grant to help fund their activities.

The challenge raised a great deal of interest and enthusiasm from members - a total of 336 entries were received from individual WIs and 34 federations successfully organised an event or project!Healthy Lifestyle Logo (Clipart Image)
The Judges found that the overall quality and standard of many of the entries were exceptionally high plus a huge response to the challenge, made choosing a winner exceptionally difficult!

FINDERN WI, DERBYSHIRE were eventually awarded FIRST PLACE in the WI Challenge.  Findern WI will receive a prize cheque for £200.

"A simple but effective winning entry giving short but well stated facts, supported by a good, inclusive menu - well done!" Judges Comments.

Second place - Chelveston-cum-Caldecott WI (Northamptonshire), Joint-Third place - Caistor WI (Lincolnshire North) and Haughton, Faddley & District WI (Cheshire), Highly Commended - Mitford WI (Northumberland), Crosby & District WI (Cumbria-Cumberland), Writtle Evening WI (Essex) and Goudhurst WI (Kent West).

SIR GAR-CARMARTHENSHIRE FEDERATION were awarded first place in the federation challenge.  Sir Gar-Carmarthenshire Federation will receive a prize cheque for £500.

Second place - Tyneside Federation, Third place - Hampshire Federation.

When we judged the entries, we were looking for a federation who could demonstrate that the message of leading a healthy lifestyle had been conveyed in a creative and appealing manner.  We were also looking for a federation who had been successful in conveying the importance of the challenge to a number of people, not just WI members, but to family, work colleagues and the general community. The winning federation successfully challenged all their members with a varied programme and received excellent, positive support from everyone who took part" James Brandon, Head of Marketing, FSA
