HIGHCROSS GROUP MEETING 2010
After the usual group busines, the Merlin Singers were the entertainment at this meeting. They sang their introductory song and then were introduced individually. They entertained with a variety of songs from the Music Hall, which members were able to join in. Sapcote WI  gave the vote of thanks which their President, Jane Twitchet, gave in a very humorous Music Hall style.

Poems were penned for  the Della Astbury Trophy annual group competition this year.  They had to be between 10 and 20 lines and called "The Good Old Days", and they were judged by the Merlin Singers. Barwell was selected as the winning entry.  To see the entries, click on the links in the Downloads box on the right-hand side of this page.

Sadly, the entry from Stoney Stanton, although displayed, was "Not as Schedule", because it shouldn't have contained a picture.  Nonethless, to see and read this very clever  poem, click on "Stoney Stanton Poem" in the Downloads box.

FOSSEWAY GROUP MEETING 2010

Hosts we were to the Fosseway Group, you know
Up on display were our photos of the snow.
News of the county website, we heard from Sue Lobb,
Clips and pics we can send her, for the WI blog.
Our Flossie entertained us with song and with dance,
Three changes of costume, she held us in a trance!
Eating was dainty – we served afternoon tea;

With china cups and cakestands, on cloths with embroiderie.
Ideas for speakers, by girls from the sixties,
   - oh how we laughed at their outfits and antics!

There was also superb display of members' winter photographs, of which just two are shwon below:
Fosseway Meeting 2010 - Dog Sledding
January 2010 - Dog Sledding in Northern Norway is a "must do".

Fosseway Meeting 2010 - Ducks Feeding
February 2010 - The ducks call for breakfast at Tallington Lakes, Lincolnshire.

CROMWELL GROUP MEETING 2009
Countesthorpe WI
hosted this year's Cromwell Group meeting, under the expert leadership of President, Mrs Dorothy Wells.  After the formal business, guests settled back to enjoy a fascinating presentation given by Mr Andrew Lounds on the origins of the Lunar Society in the 18th century.  This totally engrossing talk was delivered by Andrew in 18th century costume and using an expertly created slide presentation with sound effects.

The theme for the annual Cromwell Cup competition was "A Lunar Landscape" on a 12" cake board, not using flowers or special crafts.  This brought in a variety of interpretations as can be seen from the photograph. Cromwell Group Comp 09
Mr Lounds was asked to judge the competition which he found so difficult that he had to award joint first place.  The two WIs in this happy position were Wigston Magna (right) and Peatling Parva (left). Cromwell Group Comp Winners

Following a delicious plated supper and welcome cuppa, the audience was entertained with a whimsical and observational piece about a typical GP surgery's waiting room, ably acted out by budding Thespians of Countesthorpe WI.  The pictures below give just a flavour of this delightful little play written by a member of the hostess WI ......
