Action Women - the real story of the Women’s Institute
The Future use of the 7 central panels

In 2005 The Women’s Library received a grant from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation Heritage Programme to fund a touring exhibition based on the NFWI archives deposited at the Women’s Library. The exhibition was planned by the project curator working with WI Federations local to the three selected host venues: the Museum of English Rural Life in Reading, the Borthwick Institute in York and the Newport City Museum.
Central to each exhibition were seven panels developing the theme of ‘Action Women’.  Once the exhibitions were over The Women’s Library donated the seven big central panels to NFWI.Women In Action Panels
The panels and associated display aids are kept at Denman and federations or WIs can apply to borrow them in order to mount their own exhibition collaboratively with a local museum, library or gallery.
To help Federations and WI members to plan such an exhibition there is a “Toolkit” or handbook providing guidance. The 'Toolkit' shows how to build up contacts with local museums and how to use the core panels from the exhibition as a basis for an exhibition. One Panel being viewed
The panels are tough but light and easy to transport or store, they roll up and can either hang on walls or have frames from which they hang. The titles of the panels are:

WI a women’s organisation
WI a force for change
WI a voice for women
WI responding to need
WI providing opportunities for women
WI equipping women for active citizenship
WI Supporting Rural Women
