Launched in January 2010, Craft Club is a new national campaign to provide children and young people with the opportunity to learn craft skills from members of their community via free after-school clubs.
The NFWI is working with The Crafts Council and the UK Hand Knitting Association to help teach young people to knit.
Craft Club relies on the enthusiasm and skills of the broader community in order to pass on craft skills and techniques to its participants, or ‘Craft Clubbers’ and also needs the support of schools and individual teachers. Volunteers will receive specialist training at workshops across the country and will then become involved in their local Craft Club. The first training days for WI members have been completed and further training days will take place later this year:
9 September - Derbyshire Federation Office, Derby
14 September - Longdown Hall, Exeter, Devon
29 September - 15 Queen Street, Colchester, Essex, CO1 2PH
14 October - Durham Federation Office, Spennymoor
Tacit hands-on learning is a great experience for all young people and is not currently offered in all schools in the UK. The crafts are often split between Art & Design or Design & Technology, or may not be represented on the curriculum at all.
Craft Club hopes to redress this imbalance, allowing young people to take control of their own activities through the online resources
