2010 Inspiring Women Awards

The Search is on for the region’s inspiring women.

The 2010 Inspiring Women Awards, in association with Britannia and the Co-operative Bank, both part of The Co-operative Financial Services Group, will be celebrating 18 years of recognising the achievements of women in the North West.

Winners of the 2009 Awards represent the diversity of the type of women we seek to recognise. The Public Sector Award was won by Dr Ali Melling for her youth work that goes from working at the grass roots through to shaping National and International Government policy. The Business Award went to a woman who has been described as someone who is synonymous with the City of Manchester. Rowena Burns has shaped our lives with her work at Manchester City Council, The Airport and now as Chief Operating officer with Bruntwood.

The inaugural Social Entrepreneur Award was given to Lucy Danger who has been pioneering waste recycling since 1997. Lucy epitomizes a social entrepreneur – a visionary, risk taker, creator of jobs, making a profit and benefitting the wider community. The popular winner of the Community Award was Gee Walker who set up The Anthony Walker Foundation after the horrific murder of her son, Anthony, in 2005. Gee exudes forgiveness and her message of racial harmony and tolerance earned her a standing ovation.

Nominations are now being sought across five award categories: Public Sector; Business, sponsored by Deloitte; Community; Social Entrepreneurs, sponsored by Business Link NorthWest and new for 2010 is the Inspiring Young Women Award that seeks to recognise the achievements of our next generation. We want to hear from you about those women who make a difference through their businesses, in their community or in their families.
