The Lillies WI

Abi Tugwood, President of The Lillies WI, introduces us to her branch…

“I wanted to start-up a WI to meet other women, other than through the everyday domestic rituals of life. The traditional element of the WI is appealing, getting back to basics and a sense of community as life is so fast and quick, and it’s nice to take time getting to know other people. To take part in something that is independent from usual chores, i.e. work, family, housework.”

“The original members were family, friends, and people who enquired about local groups through the county federation. Original members of neighbouring WIs assisted us with arranging meetings, as well as the Federation Secretary who showed us examples of how to host them and organise talks and so on.”

“The Lillies was founded in May 2008 – we posted flyers that we had printed, and placed them in local amenities such as hairdressers, libraries, community centres, and also took part in an interview with the local newspaper. We now have 21 members with age ranging from around 25 to 65.”

“The group has been represented at the county resolution meeting, and hopes to put a resolution forward in the future. Interests that the group like are such things as: card making, wool spinning, burlesque dancing and composting! All our members are encouraged to put forward ideas and contacts that can do talks or bring something different and interesting to meetings. We enjoy entertaining other WIs at our party nights, which include tasty buffets, and successful auctions and quizzes.”

“The Lillies has affected our lives so much. It gives us something to look forward to and the chance to meet new people, learn new skills, and discover things that we would never consider on our own.”

“A major project, which we have embarked on as a new branch, is promoting ourselves and our social events. We are currently organising a Burlesque Dancing Evening, promoting it and creating interest, and thus making money for the fund. The Lillies have taken part in a photo shoot, to promote the NFWI promotional literature, and The Daily Mail also took photos to use in an article about the WI in their national newspaper.”

“A recent party night that we held was fun and enjoyed very much by all who attended. We showed ourselves off as a group, what we could do and who we are. People can now put faces to the group. It was very nerve wracking but rewarding, and we made a good profit.”

“We will be focusing on growing the group over the coming year, and are looking forward to getting some exciting speakers and activities lined up including: yoga, an image consultant, a Buddhist Monk, swishing, belly dancing, self defence, cake competitions and a visit to the fire station for the Christmas meeting. We aim to continue keeping the group consistent and strong so people know that they can rely on us. The Lillies aren't a flash in the pan!”The Lillies WI members in a group
