During 2011 the Federation Events committee has run a variety of events which are illustrated by the following

In April Sarah Raven came to Melksham with her Cutting Garden presentation. Nearly 200 members learnt how to plant up an area of their gardens whatever their size – you can even achieve results in a window box! – so as to produce a constant supply of cut flowers.

In June the History Wardrobe visited Derry Hill with their presentation of Votes for Women. By dressing up in different costumes they demonstrated how the clothes women wore changed as they achieved more influence in society.

In July we brought Faraday – Father of Electricity to Bromham where David Hall transformed himself into Michael Faraday and used some ingenious, and often amusing, methods to help the audience understand how Faraday played his part in the development of electricity and the lasting impact of his extraordinary achievements.

In September four coach loads of members travelled to London to view the London Olympic Site passing by many of London’s tourist attractions on the way and seeing how the London skyline is being changed with lots of new buildings in a variety of shapes and sizes.

At the end of September we were treated to a glimpse of life in Regency times with John White taking on the role of Mr Adams – the butler in a grand house – as well as Thomas Turlis – hangman.

Now we are looking forward to 2012 events. So far we have the following planned:

  • A Food and Fashion Show at Melksham Assembly Hall on 1st March with M & S Clothes, Hats from Joan Presley and finishing with a parade of outfits designed, made and modelled by some of the talented fashion and textile students from New College Swindon.
  • A day with the Crime Busters in Seend on 20th April where you will have the chance to become a crime scene investigator solving a hypothetical crime as well as learn how HM Customs work at Heathrow airport.
  • In May we will be taking a coach load of lucky members to Holland to visit Floriade 2012 – the World Horticultural Expo as well as other interesting visits including Bruges.
  • On 7th June we have our Jubilee Garden Party in Rowde, Near Devizes when we hope to welcome lots of members to enjoy the entertainment, games and cream teas.
