EVENTS FOR THE COMING MONTHS

Surrey Federation have always been pleased to welcome friends and family to many of their events and this year is no exception. Here we give a few of the events and visits that are happening in the coming months.

Special Events have arranged a concert of Show stopping favourites by Eleanor Keenan on Tuesday September 7 at 2.30pm. Eleanor will be accompanied by Phil Phillips  presenting musical memories from her repertoire. Cost £8.50 for members and friends to hear wonderful tunes by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and more.

September 13 is our special conference day at East Horsley Village Hall under the "Women Reaching Women" project banner. Called "We Can Make a Difference" it has two guest speakers, Adam Askew and Nancy Lindisfarne reporting on what has happened recently. The cost is £7.50 to include refreshments and buffet lunch (More details on our Projects and Events page).

Our Harvest Supper has now become an annual event due to its popularity. This year it is on Friday 17 September at East Horsley Village Hall 7.00pm for 7.30pm, the cost is £10 to include a super supper, of course, and entertainment provided by a group of Irish dancers. 

AUTUMN FEDERATION MEETING

This takes place at Dorking Halls on 27 September from 10.30am to 3.30pm. After Federation plans are announced in the morning, Dr. Lucy Worsley, Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces, will be talking about that position and her new book. "Courtiers, The Secret History of Kensington Palace". 

During the lunch hour there will be time to look around the stalls including Country Markets, publications and other goodies to purchase. The afternoon will be a one man show by Richard Colwell who has performed all over the world. He started playing the piano at the age of 4 and progressed to electronic instruments, and his programme includes a varied selection of music and songs.

The cost is £10 for members and £11 for friends, do come along and enjoy the day.

East Surrey Science Group is holding its next meeting at 7.30pm on September 29th at White Hart Barn, Godstone. An unexpected turn of events has led to a change of speaker and this will now be Katherine Bass of DEFRA who was advertised for earlier in the year. Katherine will be speaking on "Agriculture and Climate Change - Evidence for Policy-Making". Members and friends are very welcome and the cost is £2 payable on the door.

Scrabble Fun Days have also proved to be very popular in the past few years, so there are two this year, one on each side of the county.  The first will be at Betchworth Memorial Hall on Friday 1 October and the other will take place at Lord Pirbright's Hall, Pirbright on Friday 22 October. Doors open at 10.00am for start at 10.30am. The day will end at 4.00pm with a break of 1 hour for lunch either at a local pub, or bring a packed lunch with you. Cost £6.50 to include, tea and coffee and prizes.

In October there is a special trip planned to Eastern Canada including  a visit to the birthplace of the WI at Stoney Creek. Main centres included are Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa and Toronto, and of course, Niagara Falls. A wonderful opportunity for WI members.

International Day for Rural Women is on 15 October and we will be back at East Horsley Village Hall for an event entitled "Honey for the Honies" in aid of ACWW. Tim Lovett, President of the British Beekeepers' Association will be the main speaker and Kay East will be talking about her experiences as ACWW representative on behalf of Kent East Kent while attending the 26th Triennial conference in Arkansas. 18 October is the date for the 3 C's Science Group to welcome Mr. M. Carrigan talking on the fascinating subject of DNA Fingerprinting. At Shalford Village Hall from 1.30pm for 2.00pm at a cost of £2 per person, payable on the door, everyone is very welcome.

The SFWI annual Golf Tournament takes place on Thursday 21 October at Clandon Regis Golf Club, East Horsley. The cost of £36 includes coffee on arrival and 18 holes of golf followed by a golfers lunch.  Teeing off from 10.30am, players may request to play with, or close to one another. 

Another line-up of speakers is on offer at our Auditions day at Ripley Village Hall on Wednesday 27 October. Two sessions, morning 10.15am to 12.45pm and afternoon 2.00pm to 4.30pm will cost £4.50 per session or £8 for both. Tea/coffee and biscuits are included and there are places to eat lunch in Ripley. Come and make your own mind up about whether you would enjoy listening to the subjects on offer in your own WI.

Friday 29 October is not only Halloween but also the date of our "Dining in Style" evening at the Hilton Hotel in  Cobham.  Cost £35 to include three course meal and coffee with a drink on arrival (6.45pm for 7.45pm) and no doubt there will be a splendid evening of dancing and entertainment.  Some of you will wish to stay overnight, which can be arranged online in the coming weeks.

The Four Seasons Walks have now reached the Autumn Walk - the year flies past.  Starting at 10am at the usual venue in Great Bookham a mileage of about 8 miles is due to be covered on Wednesday 10 November. Taking a packed lunch and a dog on a lead if you wish, it will finish at Howard Road where Jan will be happy to serve tea and biscuits.

The 3C's Science Group is looking forward to Professor Dijk, Director of the Sleep Research Centre at the University of Surrey, explaining the research he is doing into "Sleep". Nearly everyone worries about this subject in one way or another, so come along to Chiddingfold on 15 November to discover what new thoughts there are in this area. The usual timings and costs apply, 1.30 for 2.00pm, pay £2 on the door and members and friends are welcome.

Three terrific Christmas shows covering from the west to the east of the County will be staged by Geraldine Horn, Jean Gable and Company. Dates and venues are Monday 6 December, Lord Pirbright's Hall, Tuesday 7 December Bletchingley Village Hall and Wednesday 8 December, Old Barn Hall, Bookham. Shows begin at 2pm and the cost is £8 to include tea. These are sure to be the most popular way to celebrate Christmas this year, so book soon or you may be disappointed.


All of our hall venues have disabled access and toilets, some have hearing loops.
