15 March is the date of the next 3C's Science Group
Meeting at
Chiddingfold Village Hall when the speaker will be Professor Mike Whittle of Spacelab whose talk is titled
"Human Movement". The cost is £2 to members and friends and doors open at 1.30pm for 200pm.
Tuesday 16 March is the date that has been chosen for a walk around London looking at Bridges and Buildings. Meet at Waterloo Station at 11am. where members will be given a pack showing the route and stopping places. Groups of 15-20 will be shown the way (2 hrs) and lunch will be in the square of Southwark Cathedral. After lunch 1-2 hours walk will visit St. Catherine's Dock for a cup of tea before leaving by underground from the Tower. £4 for the information pack.
29 March is the date for the Four Seasons Spring Walk as usual meeting in Great Bookham at 10am. Family, friends and dogs on leads all very welcome.
On Wednesday 31 March the East Surrey Science Group meets at the White Hart Barn in Godstone. The speaker on this occasion will be Katharine Bass, Scientific Adviser to the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs whose presentation will be on "Agriculture and Climate Change - Evidence for Policy Making". Cost £2 to include refreshments for members and friends.
An evening session of Auditions has again been arranged for the Spring at St. John's Parish Hall in Stoneleigh. On Thursday 8 April at 7.30pm (doors open from 6.45), there will be parking available on yellow lines after 6.30pm. Cost £4.50 to include tea/coffee and biscuits and a chance for members to decide for themselves on the quality of speakers wishing to be included in th Yearbook.
"Spring Extravaganza" is the title for a special day at Betchworth Village Hall on 13 April when Lynda Bradford will be demonstrating her skills in floral art. Floral arrangements will be among the raffle prizes for the day. After providing members with lunch, the afternoon will consist of a mix of traditional songs and music of Britain provided by The Twagger Band. They play a range of unusual instruments including concertinas, dulcimers, bagpipes, whistles, and older instruments such as the psaltery, crumhorn, harp and serpent.
Ladies are invited to join in the fun for either of the sessions or for the full day including lunch - we don't have many occasions on which to wear them these days so we would like to make this a special occasion at which to wear some pretty hats. Cost £12 per session including lunch and mid session refreshments or £17.50 for the whole day.
An invitation to a Craft Dabble Day on 16 April at Fetcham Village Hall from 9.15am to 3.30pm when among activities on offer will be iris card-folding, patchwork, parchment craft, plastic canvas work, stumpwork, braiding and tatting and an embroidery technique. There may be others, and you will be spoilt for choice. Cost £10 plus materials to include coffee and tea, bring your own lunch.
Also on 16 April if you are not into Craft but are interested in Science, the 3C's group is meeting at Milford Baptist Church Hall. The speaker will be David Williams of Surrey Wildlife Trust and his talk is entitled "Tracking mammals by tell-tale signs". Members and friends are welcome, cost £2 and time is 1.30pm for 2.00pm.
A Resolution Briefing Meeting will be held at St. Mary's Church Annexe in Fetcham on 20 April from 10.30am to 12.30pm. This will be an opportunity for members to have a further insight into the Resolution(s} that have been chosen to go forward to the NFGWI AGM in Cardiff on 2 June. Cost £5 for a meeting where WI Advisers and speakers will provide help and information on the Resolutions and how to present them in each WI.
"Music in the Parks" is the title for two events planned for Bookham on Wednesday 5 May and Crowhurst on Wednesday 12 May from 2 to 4pm. We have held Picnics in the Park in previous years and this event will be along the same lines with a picnic tea and an afternoon of fun, laughter and music. A "field " quiz is on the agenda and a local nursery will be there with plants for sale. Cost £8.75 to include picnic tea.
Just 5 miles south of Guildford the Birtley Estate is set in 48 acres of woodland and parkland including a trout lake and 8 acres of formal gardens. A leisurely stroll around a sculpture exhibition in grounds not normally open to the public has been arranged on Tuesday 18 May together with tea/coffee and home-made cakes in the Orangery. Arriving in our own cars there is plenty of parking. The cost is £5 for a visit from 2pm to 4.30pm.
Back by popular demand is another Croquet Taster Day at Surbiton Croquet Club on Tuesday 8 June. All you need to try this gentle sport is a flat pair of shoes. Cost £36 to cover morning coffee, BBQ lunch, light afternoon tea, coaching and use of equipment. Really good value for money.
Wednesday 9 June is a date to mark on the calendar for a visit to the award-winning Lightbox gallery and museum and the Surrey History Centre in Woking. There is an exhibition of works by Walter Sickert on display at the gallery and there will be a talk about the artist and the pictures and time to look round other exhibits. This will take half a day and the other half will be spent at the Surrey History Centre where many WI archives are now stored, and included is a visit behind the scenes to see the work that goes on to preserve precious old and fragile items. Cost £10 including refreshments on arrival, lunch can be taken in Woking or a picnic beside the canal.
Line Dancing is a perennial favourite with members and we have another two evenings arranged, one at Bletchingley Village Hall on Friday 9 July and the other at Normandy Village Hall on Friday 16 July to provide lots of fun and entertainment. Delys Potter will be on hand at Bletchingley to help you through the steps and Evelyn Williams will guide us at Normandy. Cost £10 to include hot dogs served in the interval, bring your own drink and glass and enjoy a great western evening.
In October there is a special trip planned to Eastern Canada including a visit to the birthplace of the WI at Stoney Creek. Main centres included are Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa and Toronto, and of course, Niagara Falls. A wonderful opportunity for WI members.
29 October is not only Halloween but also the date of our "Dining in Style" evening at the Hilton Hotel in Cobham. Cost £35 to include three course meal and coffee with a drink on arrival and no doubt there will be a splendid evening of dancing and entertainment. Some of you will wish to stay overnight, which can be arranged online in the coming weeks.
All of our hall venues have disabled access and toilets, some have hearing loops.
