NOTTINGHAMSHIRES ACWW PROJECT: MILK COWS
At the Autumn meeting in September our latest Nottinghamshire project for 2011/2012 was launched. It is to help a community of very poor women in Tamil Nadu, Southern India to buy Milk Cows and the cost of the project is £2596.  We had our very own cow there!
ACWW Cow
The full Project Title is: Social upliftment and economic empowerment of 40 poor widows in the Villupuram District.

Funds from the project will enable the women to buy milk cows and some of the many benefits include the sale of the milk to ensure food security, improvements in their health and better education for the children. The main aim is to eradicate the existing chronic poverty and improve the lives of these women and their children.

This is another very worthwhile project and I hope you will support it with enthusiasm. How can your WI help? I am sure you will have some great ideas to raise funds once again.

Himalayan Balsam Survey
The BAG (Biodiversity Action Group) are currently undertaking a survey of Himalayan Balsam across the county. The aim is to try to find out the distribution so that future control efforts can be better coordinated. They are particularly interested in the rivers that feed into the Trent such as the Rivers Idle, Ryton, Poulter, Maun, Meden, Erewash, Leen, Greet, Devon, Smite, the Polser Brook, Kingston Brook, Fairham Brook, The Fleet, Cocker Beck , Caunton Beck, Dover Beck etc . With this information they will try to identify the source of Himalayan Balsam on each catchment.
If you or your WI can help with this project more information to the identification features of Himalayan Balsam and a reporting form can be found at the BAG website (news page) www.nottsbag.org.uk
