Want to brighten up a piece of land in your area or get children outdoors growing flowers and vegetables? Funds are available from NFWI to help.

The following are suggestions on how members can get involved:

  • Take responsibility for renovating and maintaining small prime locations in their areas, eg tubs at entrance to village.
  • Start a community orchard to grow local varieties of fruit and vegetables.
  • Work with schools to encourage children to get outdoors and lead healthier lives by showing them how to grow their own flowers, fruit and vegetables.
  • Work with other groups in your area to encourage the setting up of productive gardens and food growing and tie in with WI efforts to reduce household expenditure and encourage healthy eating and home cooking.

 Tydd St Giles WI

In October, Cambridge Acre, a charity funded by the National Lottery, held two meetings in Tydd Community Centre to see if they could be of any help to us in funding the village plan. At the first meeting cameras were provided to anyone who wanted to illustrate the questionnaire about what was good or bad in the village. The second took place 10 days later after the results had been correlated, this meeting was aimed more to show what the villagers felt was needed and what was already available in the village. Representatives from various organisations were present. and as it was half term there was plenty to interest children including story telling, face painting and even a teddy tombola.

At both meetings the W.I were asked to provide refreshments and in true W.I. manner they provided sausage rolls, cakes and biscuits as well as tea, coffee and squash for the children. These were provided free of charge to visitors and all W.I. expenses were met.

On a blustery day at the beginning of September, Patricia Ashmore, Rosemary Green, Su Rowbotham and Val Ware set out to do a leaflet drop in Wisbech St. Mary following requests that a WI be formed in the village.  We met some enthusiastic young mums and several other ladies who thought that it is an excellent idea so we have high hopes that it will take off.

There will be an open meeting in the Community Centre at 7.30pm on September 19th.  If you know anyone in Wisbech St. Mary who may be interested please pass on this information.
