 AROUND THE COUNTY

News of WI's events and Celebrations that have taken place, including photographs

December:

It was birthday time for Sutton in Ashfield WI in October, when they celebrated 20 years with a lovely meal at the Red Brick House in Mansfield Woodhouse. They had 3 founder members with them, and after the meal they had a toast to the next 20 years which caused a laugh. They then looked through the scrap books of photographs and news snippets enjoying the memories and the friendships made in the past 20 years.

Shireoaks WI recently visited the John Coghlan School of Cookery near Chesterfield. 18 members went to see a 2 hour demonstration of Patisserie cookery presented by Master Chef Simon Lilley and his senior chef tutor Bryan Thompson, which was mouth-wateringly wonderful.  The tiny cakes were masterpieces of chocolate, cream and sponge and beautifully presented and were eaten as dessert with the wonderful lunch they were given after the demonstration.  They had two wines to taste, and coffee on arrival and finished with a visit to the Wine shop where various different types of chocolate and silicone cooking utensils were also on sale. Many other types of cookery demonstration are on offer as well of hands-on courses and it was a day out they would recommend to any other WIs who may be interested, although not for anyone watching their figure!  Their Secretary Dawn  was taking a course on sausage making a few weeks after and they await to hear - and taste - the results

The Wolds Group, Colston Bassett WI, Hickling WI, Kinoulton WI and Willoughby on the Wolds WI who were the hostesses for the evening held their annual meeting in October at Willoughby on the Wolds Village Hall. Guests attending were Federation Chairman Maureen Ashby, Federation Vice Chairman, Jane Jefferson together with Heather and Fiona from the County Office. The Guest speaker, Charles Hanson gave a very lively and exciting talk about the world of antiques and valued several items brought along by members. It was a fun event enjoyed by all.

Gedling WI member, Gladys  recently celebrated her 90th Birthday and was presented with a cake and Winter Hanging basket by the Right Honourable. Vernon Coaker. MP. Also at the meeting was a demonstration of Belly Dancing, in which Gladys took part – they don’t say if Vernon Coaker did as well!

Here is the last article which was in the Anniversary Edition copy in January 2011.

The New Millennium 2000    Jenny Bailey

The year 2000 - the beginning of the millennium and it brought the hope from Ellie Briggs, the Editor, that every Notts WI Member would have their own Hornblower copy - something we are still trying to achieve. County House had a Silver Jubilee Celebration, the Federation organised a Mediaeval Fair at Patchings Farm and the Group Banners, made especially for the millennium were on display for the first time. The July issue contained a form for members to take part in a national Peacock Butterfly Survey. Roy Allen Print had moved to Ollerton from Southwell.
2001 – the MMA appeal was still continuing, the February edition announced that £19,547 had been sent in through the boob tubes alone! Another appeal asked for members help, this time to knit - Teddies for Tragedies and the Calendar changed to “Dates for your Diary”.   Ellie decided after 6 years the time had come for her to retire and I (Jenny Bailey) took over from the June Edition. I began the  “Thought of the Month” with

“May the hinges of our friendship never rust”
and decided to take out the information from the letters I received as Editor and publish it differently and in August “Notts Natter” began. Logos appeared on the Committee Headings.  From the beginning I really enjoyed producing the Front Cover, of course I was producing it on my computer in colour but it was being printed in black and white! I enquired about the cost of colour, (this was pre digital), and I persuaded the Executive to have the Celebration of Christmas cover (November) in two colours and British Sugar very kindly sponsored the cost of one colour. Red and green was the obvious choice, it looked wonderful - well I thought so, the first front in colour, lovely green Christmas trees and a robins red breast.
2002 - News and adverts could be sent by e-mail for the first time, I began a search for the oldest Nottinghamshire member, and in June the MMA total raised by members with many fund raising events plus the boob tubes was a fantastic £49,268 2003 – May the Federation Secretary wrote a Letter as we were in between Chairman. In October “ Best of the Best” a new feature with good ideas from WI’s. An appeal for members to knit hats and gloves for Samaritans Purse appeared. 2004 and I began to use more logos in the typed copy. The September edition included a Stop Press “The Day the Rains came Down”, storm damage had happened at County House and a “Reminders of Closing dates” was introduced. 2005 and another Anniversary year - 90 years of the WI! and 30 years at County House.“Coming Soon” began, to advertise a Federation event. For the September edition we had colour again but just one – it was a green arch surrounding County House. There was a “Let’s Celebrate” as well as “Around the County” for the 90thyear.   2006 -  “Burundi Bears” nearly took over County House!  In June I printed a recipe for Elephant Stew. Not really suitable for the County Lunch perhaps.
Ingredients: 1 Elephant; 2 Rabbits; Brown Gravy; Salt & Pepper
1. Cut the elephant into bite sized pieces, this should take about 2 months.
2. Cover in the gravy, cool over a kerosene fire at 465 deg for about 4 weeks.
3. This will serve approximately 3800 people.
4. Two rabbits may be added to make it go further, but only if necessary, as most people do not like to find hares in their stew!

During the later months of 2006 the Federation was preparing events for 2007 as it would be our 90th Year. With the advent of digital printing the costs of using colour had come down and at last I persuaded the Executive to give it a trial run for the 90th year (I knew we would keep to it) and they also gave me approval to change the heading ! I did about 10 different ones for them to choose from – well they do have to do something.

2007 Front Hornblower
2007 – Notts WI @ 90. The February edition – New Heading and Full Colour! and new Printer,
Roy Allen sold the company to Paul Jackson, his company is named PJ Print Ltd, still printed at Ollerton. The Herald moved to head the Diary Dates – I couldn’t loose him. The contact and print details moved to the back page. I tried to use as many colours as I could on that first one. Of course I forgot the back would be in colour so in the March edition I moved Around the County to the back and you could actually tell who was in the photographs at last! No change had taken place in the price by the way. A “Memory Archive” began, to last the whole year.

2008 – more logos were being used to break up the type and Around the County had a new heading. The August edition nearly didn’t make it, the delivery van was involved in an accident but managed to save the Hornblower copies. 2009 – April a “Secretaries Letter” as we were in between Chairman. A “Favourite Apple Recipes” book was launched at the Autumn Meeting in time for Apple Day. 2010 – February and an Anniversary again -  35 years at County House, National launched a new logo, the Advertisements and the 50/50 club both had new logos. The Diary Dates changed to “Forthcoming Events” with an extra column for Post codes. The Police Aid Convoys were still going strong and appealing for funds.
2011  - Celebrating 40 years of the Hornblower! Changes for 2011, yes there was one big change, there would not be a Yorkshire Tea competition for members to do any more and I had to think of how to use the space. The cost by the way in 2011 works out at 26p per copy from 16p in 1999 and 2p in 1971 when it began.

I have come to the end of  articles from the Anniversary Edition just in time!
I hope you have enjoyed reading them if you didn’t have the chance to see the Anniversary copy. 2012 is yet another anniversary, 95 years of the WI in Nottinghamshire and with it some more memories.
