Human trafficking

On 17 October 2007, we joined forces with Amnesty International Wales in a campaign to help victims of human trafficking for the sex trade in Wales. Recent research by Amnesty International Wales has identified that trafficking is a growing problem affecting more and more parts of Wales. It is not unique to cities such as Cardiff and Newport but also pockets of rural communities in North Wales such as Penmaenmawr, Cemaes Bay, Rhuddlan and Colwyn Bay.

On 23 March 2007 the UK signed the Council of Europe Convention Against Trafficking and this requires action and investment from the Welsh Assembly Government. Our campaign calls on the Welsh Assembly Government to:-
• Provide secure accommodation for the victims of trafficking in Wales;
• Provide support services, medical care and legal advice to victims in Wales.

Hundreds of members have supported the campaign by sending a petition postcard to their local AM and another to the First Minister.

A petition in the form of a striking portrait of a woman made of hundreds of signed postcards was presented to the First Minister at an event at The Senedd on 18 June hosted by Joyce Watson AM, Chair of the All Party Group on the Trafficking of Women and Children.
