Children's Diet, Exercise and Health

The WI has a long-standing history of commitment to improving the nation's diet and health, particularly regarding food and sustainability issues. At the 2003 NFWI AGM, members passed this resolution with an overwhelming majority:

'This meeting views with concern the increase in obesity and diet-related health problems in children, and the associated risk of chronic disease in later life, and urges HM Government to regulate the promotion to children of foods that contribute to an unhealthy diet and to ensure increased opportunities for exercise and practical food education in schools.'

The WI is part of the Children's Food Campaign which aims to improve young people’s health and well-being, through better food and food teaching in schools, and by protecting children from junk food marketing. The campaign is supported by over 300 organisations and 12,000 members of the public.Children

This year the Children's Food Campaign will be focussing on:

  • Better food in schools
  • To protect children from junk food advertising
  • Every child to be taught about healthy food and cookery at school
  • Clear food labelling that everyone can understand, including children
