Care of our Environment

Birch trees

The Care of our Environment campaign was established following a resolution at the 2005 NFWI AGM. The campaign focuses on waste prevention and reduction and the conservation of our natural resources. As part of the campaign, we have looked at how individuals can make changes to their lives, how supermarkets can reduce their food packaging waste, and how the Government can encourage individuals and industry to make changes through their Waste Strategy Review.

The Issue
Our members are concerned about the amount of waste that is produced. They are calling on individuals to reduce waste and to conserve resources, as well as calling on manufacturers, retailers and policy makers to reduce waste in the production, packaging and transportation of public and consumer goods.

The UK produces 434 million tonnes of waste each year, of which 73 % goes to landfill. The UK recycling rate of 27 % is one of the worst in the EU.

Get involved
The NFWI continues to campaign on environmental issues. If you would like to get involved please see our Women and Climate Change campaign or the Fast Fashion initiative.
