Love Food Champions
The NFWI joined forces with WRAP to teach Love Food groups how to cut their food waste and save money.
90@90 Project
Our 90@90 project, launched in 2005, promoted sustainable consumption among WI members and their communities through a variety of member-led projects looking at food, the home and transport.
WI Carbon Challenge
The WI Carbon Challenge was proudly supported by Marks & Spencer. More than 10,000 people pledged they were ready to put their best foot forward to reduce their carbon footprint and make a real difference.
Farmgate Milk Prices
In 2005, WI members voted to campaign to raise awareness of the discrepancy between the retail and farmgate price of milk. In September 2007 the WI launched an Action Pack in Support of British Dairy Farmers to aid in continuing campaigning efforts.
Packaging
In 2006 the WI held a Packaging Day of Action with over 100 individual actions across England and Wales which saw WI members return necessary and excessive food packaging to supermarkets.
Women and the Vote
The National Federation of Women's Institutes supported the Women and the Vote campaign, celebrating 90 years since women won the vote.
Children's Diet, Exercise and Health
The WI is part of the Children's Food Campaign which aims to improve young people's health and well-being, through better food and food teaching in schools, and by protecting children from junk food advertising.
Adult Education
The NFWI has been working on adult education since 1922 when a resolution was passed which called on the Government to recognise the great need for the continuance and development of adult education in rural districts and the role that could be played by the voluntary sector.
Community Hospitals
At our 2007 AGM, the WI passed a resolution calling on the Government to stop the closure of community hospitals. WI members are calling for measures to protect these services and support our local communities.
Renewable Energy
The Energy Saving Trust (EST) joined with the NFWI to offer WI members support on all aspects of domestic energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Local Post Office Closures
The NFWI together with ViRSA (the Village Retail Services Association) issued guidance for members interested in establishing community run post offices.
Chemicals and Health
The WI campaigned to reduce the threat from tens of thousands of hazardous chemicals that are manufactured, used and released into the environment every day through the introduction of the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) legislation in the European Parliament.
