About me
I’m a freelance travel writer/photographer based in Yorkshire. My husband and I run Aspinall Ink, a business which involves both of us in photography and journalism – with a bit of PR. I also work full-time but I fit my love of photography and writing around my job by writing about - and photographing - the things I love: food, travel, nature and my home county of Yorkshire.
As someone with significant hearing loss, my visual sense is especially precious to me I am grateful to have my photography - a passion which doesn’t involve needing to hear. Writing is also a great way for me to communicate without hearing - as is social media. I’m a big fan of Twitter and I’m one of the co-founders of #Yorkshirehour, a weekly business networking event which takes place on Twitter every Wednesday between and 8 and 9pm. #Yorkshirehour has trended as the most talked about topic in the UK several times and has once trended at number 1 in the world!
I’m passionate about making the world a better place for people with hearing loss. I have struggled to come to terms with my deafness - but I’m getting there. I now want to help others who find themselves in the same situation as me either because of sudden – or gradual – hearing loss. I write for an independent deaf news and views website called The Limping Chicken and I am a supporter of Hearing Link, a charity committed to “achieving the best quality of life for adults affected by hearing loss, whose main method of communication is speech”.
I joined my local WI group, Tea and Tarts WI (Huddersfield Central) in March 2011 and I have made some lovely friends there. I’ve learned how to make canapées and sushi – and even bunting!
