Full Description
A discovery course combining illustrated lectures, video presentations and tutor accompanied visits to two unique and magnificent Georgian Houses.
A private visit will be made to the small but dignified Baroque mansion, Ardington House c.1720, home of the Baring banking family. Renowned as having some of the finest brickwork in England its interior is unlike any other being dominated by a magnificent Imperial staircase. Its gardens are not extensive but well laid out and benefiting from their close proximity to the River Ginge.
We will visit the splendid National Trust property of Basildon Park c.1766. Built for Sir Francis Sykes on a sloping site leading down to the Thames, it was the location for Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Built of Bath Stone, it is square with a portico in the centre of the entrance front, and a bay at the rear overlooking the garden. The hall, dining room and withdrawing room have plasterwork of extremely fine quality. At the centre of Basildon is a truly spectacular staircase which, seen on a sunny day, is a sight to behold.
The course will conclude with a tutor conducted tour of Marcham Park (Denman College) c.1803-05 a treasure in its own right containing many fine examples of art, craft and design.
Lectures will show the design and development of the English Country House from its origins in the medieval castle to its finale in the 20th century and will include the fine and decorative arts which adorn it.
Morning coffee and biscuits will be served at Ardington House and a picnic tea will be provided for the visit to Basildon Park.
Photography is not permitted inside either house.
The course will be led by Bernard Pumfrey a highly qualified and widely experienced Denman tutor who is known for his enthusiastic approach, lively narrative and friendly personality.
