Full Description
We will study in detail Jane Austen's final completed novel, looking in particular at contemporary issues which influenced the author's approach to this text: romanticism, a fast-changing society, marital relationships, the position of women, the role of the Navy in national defence, the popularity of seaside resorts. Events in Jane Austen's own life will also be considered as influential in creating the autumnal tone of the writing. There will be a day's visit to a relevant location.
