Indigo and Shibori (091.1063)
Tutor: Jane Callender
Summary
You will be taught many shibori resist techniques – stitch, wrapping and clamping, and how to design successfully with them for a stunning range of indigo resist dyed pattern and textured fabric.
Full Description
An initial presentation will introduce you to indigo, and how an indigo vat is made and used, and to the various techniques of shibori you will be using.
Both traditional and innovative methods will be taught and worked on cotton and silk fabric either in isolation or in various combinations. The stitch resist technique uses hand stitching which can create both pattern and texture, and you will be shown a method of putting pattern into repeat. Cylinder wrapping or bo maki shibori methods includes Arashi. Itajime, or fold and clamp resists, offers bold dynamics of design whereas binding and capping can be worked with delicacy. There is plenty of room to experiment.
Your finished fabrics can be enjoyed as indigo shibori in its own right, used for patchwork and quilting or an item of clothing. The actions you will engage in will not only produce wonderful fabrics, but will open the doors to many other areas of textile exploration.
You are encouraged to work at your own pace. Tuition includes demonstrations, information sheets, books, samples and fabrics to view with one to one tuition throughout the course in addition to group sessions.
Before the course you will receive an equipment list detailing the fabrics and sewing things you should bring with you. There will be an additional cost of £10 - £15 max for indigo dyes and thread used.
Optional purchases: extra thread, indigo dye packs, stencils etc.
