Launch of the WI Carbon Challenge
6 June 2007

A new initiative calling on UK consumers to reduce their carbon footprint will be launched today by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI). The WI Carbon Challenge, supported by M&S, will be announced at the organisation’s AGM on 6 June at the Royal Albert Hall.

The WI Carbon Challenge encourages WI members and the public to reduce their carbon emissions by 20%. Participants will measure their carbon footprint using WWF's footprint calculator and receive tailored tips to help them reduce their impact on the environment.

Fay Mansell, NFWI Chair, said: “Climate change is the biggest challenge facing society today. By taking part in the WI Carbon Challenge, everyone has the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint and play their part in tackling global warming.

“We are expecting about 10,000 people to take part and this could lead to a potential saving of 20,000 tonnes of carbon. This is a great opportunity for people across the country to really make a difference and reduce their carbon footprints.”

Stuart Rose, Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer, said “We are proud to be supporting the WI Carbon Challenge. Under Plan A, our new eco-plan, we have committed to helping customers take action to reduce their individual impact on the environment.

“The WI Carbon Challenge does just that by providing simple and effective solutions and support so that you can make real changes. I would urge everyone to go onto the WI website, or ours, and sign up today. If we all take small steps, we really can make a big difference.”
