Amy is concerned about the somewhat misrepresentative image of the WI. Many of her friends initially said that they were too young to join. Amy convinced them they were wrong and got 103 members aged between 28 and 83 joining at their first meeting.
There are a lot of hidden talents in the area and the Yarmouth IW WI is determined to discover them as well as being proactive in updating the image of the WI.
Amy said, "The WI is a wonderful organisation and it needs to be brought to a new generation of women. The face of the WI needs to change because the life of women has changed.
"The WI campaigns are fantastic. The local WIs can provide friendship and fun as well as bringing the community together. Our WI will give women an opportunity to express their creativity, take up new hobbies or just get two hours away from their hectic life."
Following the spirit of the WI, no issue is too hard or embarrassing to deal with. And, moving with the times, all minutes will be made available via email. Those who do not have internet access will be teamed up with an "e-buddy".
"We are going to deal with both fun and serious issues”, Amy said. Some other topics Yarmouth IW WI will deal with are: how to buy and sell on Ebay, salsa dancing, business in the community, how to speak in public, organic food, how to write a will and how to deal with insurance tax. "We want women to be able to take control over their own finances," Amy said.
Other interesting speakers lined up are for example Nick Francis, a high profile divorce lawyer and Captain Joanna Hellier, who will talk about Iraq from a female officer’s experience. |
